Most gardeners consider bone meal an excellent source of plant nutrition, and a good soil additive. It's high phosphorus content is known to be good for use when planting bulbs or starter plants, and for general purpose feeding on flowering plants, fruits and vegetables. All that is true - provided you buy the right bone meal.
The way some bone meal products are made, they offer very little available nutrition to the plant. That's because they simply take surplus bones from meat processing plants and crush them into small flakes. These flakes may take years before they break down enough to release any quantity of nutrients. And if they're not thoroughly cleaned before crushing, they can release contaminants into the soil.
At Vigoro, we make bone meal the right way. First it's steam-cleaned to remove any impurities. Then it's ground to a fine powder so it will break down more quickly in the soil and release nutrients to the plant. In the case of our premium bone meal, the powder is then made into dust-free granules. Next time you need bone meal, insist on Vigoro. It's simply a better bone meal.
