Printers

Modern printers belong to one of three general types: Ink-jet, Laser, or Dot-matrix. Each of these has its advantages and disadvantages.

Ink-jet printers

advantages

• Inexpensive to buy
• Prints excellent high-quality images
• Prints in colour

disadvantages

• Expensive to operate; the ink cartridges run out quickly and are costly to replace.

Note: This kind of printer is most often used in homes where quality is important and people want to use it for printing many different things including photos, school work, etc.

Laser printers

advantages

• Inexpensive to operate
• Prints with the highest quality of the three printer types

disadvantages

• Expensive to buy
• Colour laser printers are extremely expensive.

Note: This kind of printer is most often used in offices and desktop publishing environments where the print quality is important and a high-volume of material is printed.

Dot-matrix printers

advantages

• Very inexpensive to buy
• Very inexpensive to operate

disadvantages

• Terrible quality.

Note: This kind of printer is most often used for printing invoices and for other high-volume purposes where the print quality is negligible as long as it is readable.
