The motherboard regulates how data moves throughout the computer's different components. Each component (e.g. the CPU, the video card, the hard drive) is attached to the motherboard. When purchasing a motherboard, it is important to buy a product that will not only serve your current hardware needs, but also your prospective needs in the forseeable future. These are the main components of a motherboard:

ISA slots: Most hardware accessories such as modems and sound cards are made for ISA format. Almost all hardware is available in ISA format. A good motherboard should have at least 3 ISA slots.
PCI slots: These do the same job as ISA slots, but are more modern and thus faster. At least 3 PCI slots are necessary.
On-board controller: The older motherboards needed a "controller card" which plugged into an ISA slot. Almost all modern motherboards come with this built-in.
72-pin RAM slots. These slots hold EDO or standard 72-pin RAM which are currently the most common type. They are, however, becoming obsolete because of SDRAM.
SDRAM sockets. These sockets hold very fast SDRAM. A new motherboard should have at least two of these.
Our Motherboards
QDI is quite possibly the best name in motherboard technology. Their jumperless motherboards are available in many different models at a reasonable price. Our new systems generally come equipped with the QDI Titanium 1B:

This motherboard supports all standard Pentium and AMD CPUs. No jumpers means seemless upgrading: plug in the new chip and change a CMOS setting. This motherboard is sure to last several upgrades.
