by Ross Butler
This picture offers a rare glimpse of what is believed to be America’s first Stars and Stripes flag flown in battle. This obscure flag is shown with the Hutton Horn , the powder horn used in battle by Lieut. Chris Hutton, which bears authentic inscriptions to prove that the flag did indeed fly above Fort Schuyler, later Fort Stanwix, on August 3, 1777 when the Fort was under siege by British and Loyalist forces.
The original oil painting was created in 1975 to celebrate the American bicentennial. The late Canadian artist Ross Butler, (a direct descendant of Col. John Butler,UE, a member of the opposing force at Fort Schuyler) was famous for his historically accurate depictions of farm animals. His artwork is treasured worldwide by collectors.
Limited numbers of this high quality 16” X 20” print are available by mail from the ROSS BUTLER STUDIO Agricultural Art Gallery for only$18.00 (US) or $25.00 (Cdn.) plus shipping.
